After-School Kayaking Details – Please Read Carefully

  • Kayak Kids shuttle bus will be awaiting clients in the school parking lot as soon as the school day ends. Clients will be met by their instructor, who will ensure all rostered clients are present, and board the shuttle to be transported 2.2 miles to Lake Murray.
  • Upon arrival, clients will be outfitted with personal floatation devices (PFDs) and given safety instructions and guidance on proper kayak assembly and care. From there they will warm up and be physically assessed by the instructors and paired with appropriate partners.
  • Before getting into the kayaks and on the water, clients will receive directions on how to properly hold and maneuver paddles through the water. Clients will then learn proper techniques to get into their kayaks both individually and with their partner, while anchored to shore.
  • When ready, clients will proceed into the water and will be taught flatwater kayaking utilizing the criteria established by the American Canoeing Association, modified for age.
  • During the entire class, clients will have a 4:1 client to staff ratio ensuring the utmost safety precautions are upheld. All instructors will be Red Cross certified in first aid, CPR and water safety.
  • At the end of the day’s lesson, clients will return to shore and proceed to properly break down kayaks and paddles and learn proper storage techniques.
  • Finally, they will board the shuttle for the return trip to school where they will be dropped off to their parents/guardians or after school program.
  • Throughout the 4-week session, clients will learn to care for and paddle inflatable tandem kayaks (IKs) and sit on and sit in kayaks, giving them a broad spectrum of experiences in both comfort, stability and maneuverability. This variety will allow them to decide which type of kayak is right for them as they continue their journey towards being proficient kayakers.
There is nothing—absolutely nothing—half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
